Pantera is a band around which as a metalhead there is no way around it. Hardly any other band has shaped the music landscape with its unique sound like the four guys from Texas. In the mid 90s they were considered the most influential and groundbreaking hard group of their time. While at the beginning of their band history they were still clearly oriented towards the power metal of bands like Iron Maiden or Mötley Crüe, they found their own sound over time. It was much harder than anything you could hear at that time. They called their music "Groove-Metal". It fit like a glove! The sluggish riffs of guitarist Dimeback Darrell paired with the groovy drums shaped a whole generation of newly emerging metal bands.
Cowboys from Hell
Singer Phil Anselmo also contributes an important part to the overall concept. His singing style varies between rough roar and deeper clear vocals. So he still managed to give the hard music a touch of melody. They were able to sell more than five million records and are still one of the most successful and influential metal bands in history. The highlight of their work is the album "Vulgar Display of Power", which for many fans and critics is the Magnus Opus of the band and a blue print of modern metal.
After the band split up in 2003, guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul started a new band. During one of their concerts Dimebag Darrell was shot dead on stage by a mentally disturbed fan.
